School places in Dubai are not something you sort out after you land. For the schools most European families want, the timeline starts before the job offer is even signed.
The timeline, working backwards
Admissions consultants describe a process that runs roughly twelve months end to end, and longer for oversubscribed schools:
- 12–18 months out: register interest at premium schools. Mid-market schools generally need 6–9 months.
- 9 months out: submit applications and pay registration fees, commonly AED 500–1,500 per school and usually non-refundable.
- 6 months out: assessments — play-based for the youngest, CAT4 or MAP-style testing from around Year 3.
- 3 months out: offers arrive, with a deposit typically around 10% of annual fees to hold the place.
- On arrival: finalise enrolment with KHDA documentation.
Apply to more than one school. Waiting lists at popular year groups are real, and the good news is that registration fees are small relative to the cost of not having a place in September.
What it costs
Fees are regulated and published by KHDA, and cluster into tiers. Published 2026 ranges put premium, Outstanding-rated schools at roughly AED 75,000–110,000 a year, mid-market at AED 45,000–75,000, and the value tier at AED 20,000–45,000. Budget another 5–8% on top for transport, books, ICT levies and trips.
Two things families underestimate: fees are per child, and they rise as the child moves up the school. A place in Year 1 at the bottom of a fee scale is not the same commitment as the same school in Year 12.
Negotiating tip. School fee support is one of the most commonly negotiated items in a Dubai package, and one of the most valuable. If the employer will not raise salary, ask about education allowance instead.
Choosing a curriculum
Dubai has schools running British, American, IB, Indian, French, German and other curricula. The practical questions for a European family are:
- Where do you expect the child to finish school? If you may return to Europe, curriculum continuity matters more than reputation.
- What is the KHDA inspection rating? It is public, updated, and the closest thing to an objective signal you will get.
- How far is it really? Dubai traffic makes a 15 km school run a 50-minute reality twice a day. Pick the neighbourhood and the school together, not in sequence.
- What is the language of instruction and the Arabic requirement? Arabic is compulsory in specified year groups.
The documents that hold everything up
Schools require attested transfer certificates from the previous school, vaccination records, passport, visa and Emirates ID copies (or proof they are in process), and birth certificates. Attestation happens in your home country and takes weeks. Start it before you fly — this single item causes more September panic than anything else.
If you arrive mid-year
It is workable but narrows your options. Consider a school with capacity as a bridge for one term while you sit on the waiting list of your first choice, rather than accepting a poor long-term fit under time pressure.
