The cost of living in Dubai depends on your home, household and employment package. Build two numbers before you commit: the cost of a normal month and the cash needed to get through the move. An annual average cannot tell you whether you can pay the next deposit.
Start here: use current property listings, written benefit details and quotes for your household. Enter those figures in the free Dubai moving cost calculator and budget worksheet. The example below explains the method; it is not a claim about typical Dubai prices.
What should your Dubai living budget include?
Separate recurring expenses from annual bills and one-off moving costs. Record what your employer pays directly, what it reimburses later and what you must fund yourself. A reimbursement is still a cash-flow requirement until it reaches your account.
| Budget line | What to collect | What can be missed |
|---|---|---|
| Housing | Annual rent and the proposed payment schedule | Deposit, agency charges, registration, temporary accommodation and renewal costs |
| Utilities and cooling | Building-specific billing arrangements and current tariffs | Separate cooling bills, deposits, setup charges and seasonal use |
| Mobile and internet | A quote showing the full contract cost | Promotional expiry, installation, equipment and cancellation charges |
| Food and household spending | A realistic weekly shopping list | Delivery charges, meals out, cleaning and imported products |
| Transport | Your actual home-to-work route | Parking, taxis, tolls, insurance, registration and maintenance if driving |
| School or childcare | A written fee schedule for each child | Application, transport, uniforms, meals, activities and payment dates |
| Health cover | Policy and benefit details for every household member | Premiums you pay, co-payments, exclusions and cover before a policy starts |
| Life outside Dubai | Your continuing commitments in Europe | Mortgage or storage, family support, subscriptions, transfers and flights home |
Use the Dubai rental upfront-cost guide to separate rent from deposits and fees. Check health cover questions with HR or your insurer instead of assuming that every dependant is covered.
Worked example: turn annual costs into a monthly plan
Every figure in this example is an invented planning assumption in AED. It describes a hypothetical household, not a market average, minimum salary or recommended spending level. Replace each row with your own evidence.
| Illustrative item | Annual assumption | Monthly allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Rent | 84,000 | 7,000 |
| Utilities, cooling and connectivity | 12,000 | 1,000 |
| Groceries and household spending | 24,000 | 2,000 |
| Transport | 12,000 | 1,000 |
| Health costs paid by the household | 6,000 | 500 |
| Flights and other annual spending | 12,000 | 1,000 |
| Total in this example | 150,000 | 12,500 |
The calculation is annual costs divided by 12. Schooling, childcare, debts and any other missing commitments must be added when relevant. If this hypothetical household receives AED 18,000 a month after its applicable deductions, the difference is AED 5,500 before additional spending, savings and unexpected costs. That difference is not a guarantee of what it will save.
Why monthly affordability and arrival cash are different
In the example, rent averages AED 7,000 a month. If the hypothetical contract requires four equal instalments, each rent payment is AED 21,000. The household would need that amount on the agreed date, plus the deposits and other charges in its actual contract. The payment schedule must be checked; four instalments are an assumption here.
Make an arrival cash list with these separate rows:
- Travel, baggage and temporary accommodation.
- The first rent payment, refundable deposits and non-refundable setup fees.
- Furniture, essential equipment, shipping and storage.
- Document, residency or appointment costs that you personally must pay.
- Daily living costs until your first confirmed salary or reimbursement arrives.
- A reserve you keep available for delays and unexpected expenses.
Do not count a refundable deposit as spendable money while it is held. Do not add the same annual rent twice: the first payment is part of the annual total, even though it appears in the arrival cash schedule.
Adapt the budget to your household
Moving alone or as a couple
Compare complete housing options with the commute included. A lower rent can come with higher travel costs. If sharing, confirm the permitted arrangement, what bills are included and your own deposit obligations. For couples, budget using income that is confirmed rather than a hoped-for second job.
Moving with children
Obtain the fee schedule and availability for each child’s year group before choosing a neighbourhood. Add childcare, school transport and term payment dates. Review the school admissions checklist alongside the school’s current information.
Receiving employer allowances
Keep salary, housing support, schooling support, insurance and relocation reimbursement in separate rows. Check caps, eligibility, start dates and repayment conditions in writing. This avoids counting a benefit twice or treating a restricted allowance as unrestricted income.
Check the offer against your current position
Compare money left after your actual obligations in each country, using consistent periods and currencies. Include continuing commitments, pension or savings contributions and the full cost of moving. A budget worksheet does not establish your tax residence or personal tax obligations; check those separately for your circumstances.
For currency conversions, record the date and the rate you used. Compare the amount the recipient receives after fees, then test how a less favourable rate would affect recurring commitments. See the Europe–UAE transfer planning guide for comparison questions.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to live in Dubai per month?
There is no single useful number for every household. Add your quoted annual costs, divide by 12 and include ordinary monthly spending. Keep arrival costs and payment dates in a separate cash-flow plan.
What salary is enough to move to Dubai?
Test the confirmed package against your own housing, household costs and savings goals. The worked example is a calculation exercise, not a salary threshold or recommendation to accept an offer.
Where can I make my own budget?
Use the free Dubai move planner for an initial estimate and download the editable worksheet to keep your quotes and assumptions. Revisit it when your accommodation, household needs or benefit package changes.
